The best privacy-friendly browsers (and how to pick one)

Your browser sees almost everything you do online, so switching to a more private one, or just tightening the one you have, is one of the easiest privacy wins there is. Here are the options worth knowing, with honest pros and cons.

The main choices

  • Firefox. Open-source, independent, and genuinely private once you turn on its strict tracking protection. The most flexible all-rounder, and a solid default for most people.
  • Brave. Blocks ads and trackers out of the box, which makes it fast and private with no setup. The catch is the built-in crypto and rewards features, which you can simply ignore or switch off.
  • Mullvad Browser. Built for maximum privacy (by the Tor Project and the Mullvad VPN team) to make you blend in with other users. Excellent for sensitive browsing, though stripped-back for everyday use.
  • DuckDuckGo browser. Simple and privacy-first, with strong tracker blocking and a one-tap “clear everything” button. Good for phones especially.
  • Safari. Reasonable tracking protection on Apple devices, and a fine default if you stay in the Apple world.

The one to be wary of for privacy is Chrome: it is fast and convenient, but it is made by Google, whose business is data. It is the least private of the mainstream options.

How to make any browser more private

You do not have to switch to get most of the benefit:

  • Turn on the strictest tracking protection your browser offers.
  • Add a good content blocker like uBlock Origin (on browsers that support it).
  • Set it to clear cookies on exit, or browse sensitive things in a private window.
  • Change your default search engine to a private one (more on that below).

Simplest upgrade: install Firefox or Brave, turn tracking protection to strict, and switch your search engine to a private option. Five minutes, and most everyday tracking is gone.
